Instruments of the Mass Spectrometry Facility
We routinely offer the ionization methods ESI, APCI, MALDI, EI and LIFDI;
other ionization methods, LC-MS, TLC-MS, MS/MS and MALDI imaging experiments on request.
The Mass Spectrometry Facility of the Chemical Institutes currently operates seven mass spectrometers:
MAT 95 XL Sector Instrument
MAT 95 XL sector intrument from Thermo Finnigan (Bremen)
Installation in 1998 in room 0.508.
Measurements: EI
on request: accurate mass determination, DEI, CI, FD, ESI
Accuracy of mass determination: 0.2 Da (spectrum) or 0.001 Da (accurate mass)
Calibration in EI mode is performed with perfluorokerosene.
Accurate masses are determined by peak matching with perfluorokerosene.
MAT 90 Sector Instrument
MAT 90 sector instrument from Thermo Finnigan (Bremen)
First installation in 1989; installation in Bonn in room 0.508 in 2009
The MAT 90 was given to us by the University of Twente/NL.
Thank you very much!
Measurements: EI
on request: accurate mass determination, LIFDI, CI, FAB
Accuracy of mass determination: 0.2 Da (spectrum) or 0 001 Da (accurate mass)
Calibration in EI mode is performed with perfluorokerosene.
Accurate masses are determined by peak matching with perfluorokerosene.
MALDI ultrafleXtreme TOF/TOF
ultrafleXtreme TOF/TOF time-of-flight mass spectrometer from Bruker Daltonik (Bremen)
Installation in 2018 in room 0.508
Measurements: MALDI (+/-)
on request: MS/MS, MALDI-Imaging
Accuracy of mass determination: 100 ppm in linear mode, 20 ppm in reflectron mode
Most spectra are calibrated externally with polystyrene/Ag+.
micrOTOF-Q
micrOTOF-Q Q/TOF mass spectrometer from Bruker Daltonik (Bremen)
with HPLC system Agilent 1200 series
Installation in 2006. The instrument is in room 0.516.
measurements: ESI (+/-)
on request: accurate mass determination, LC-MS, APCI, nano-ESI, MS/MS, TLC-MS
Accuracy of mass determination: 0.1 Da (spectrum) and 5 ppm (accurate mass)
ESI spectra are usually measured with autosampler (solvent: acetonitrile, sometimes also methanol) and externally calibrated with sodium formate.
1. Orbitrap XL
Orbitrap XL mass spectrometer from Thermo Fisher Scientific (Bremen)
with autosampler Dionex Ultimate 3000
Installation in 2015. The device is in room 0.516.
Measurements: ESI (+/-) and APCI with accurate mass determination
on request: APPI, nano-ESI, MS/MS with CID or ETD
Accuracy of mass determination: 0.005 Da (spectrum) and 1 mDa (accurate mass)
ESI spectra are usually measured with autosampler (solvent: acetonitrile).
2. Orbitrap XL
Orbitrap XL mass spectrometer from Thermo Fisher Scientific (Bremen)
with autosampler Dionex Ultimate 3000
Installation as a refurbished instrument in 2022 in room 0.516.
Measurements: ESI (+/-) and APCI incl. accurate mass determination
on request: APPI, nano-ESI, MS/MS with CID
Accuracy of mass determination: 0.005 Da (spectrum) and 1 mDa (accurate mass)
ESI spectra are usually measured with autosampler (solvent: acetonitrile).
TLC plate express
plate express TLC extraction device from Advion
Installation in 2015. The device is in room 0.516.
TLC spots can be automatically extracted and directly measured via ESI at the Q/TOF.
Apex IV FT-ICR
FT-ICR mass spectrometer with 7 T-magnet from Bruker Daltonik (Bremen)
Installation in 2003 in room 0.510.
Ionization sources: ESI, nano-ESI, MALDI, EI/CI
Fragmentation methods: CID, IRMPD, ECD
MALDI autoflex II TOF/TOF
autoflex II TOF/TOF time of flight mass spectrometer from Bruker Daltonik (Bremen)
Installation in 2005, decommissioned in 2020.
The device was in room 0. 508.
Measurements: MALDI (+/-)
on request: MS/MS
Accuracy of mass determination: 300 ppm
Most spectra were calibrated externally with polystyrene/Ag+.
