Open-Shell Main-Group Chemistry: From Fundamental Structural Insights to Small Molecules Activation and Catalysis
Open-shell main-group compounds with one or more unpaired electrons (i.e. radicals, diradicals etc.) are appealing synthetic targets owing to their (anticipated) intriguing electronic structures, reactivity profiles, and physical (optical, electronic, magnetic) properties. Consequently, they have a substantial potential in synthesis and catalysis as well as molecular building-blocks for advanced functional materials. The inherent high reactivity and thermal instability of these open-shell species remain however major issues in exploiting their full potential for practical applications.
