Welcome to elemental analysis
Sample submission & measurement times
- Measurement days: Thurs and Fri, up to max. 9 samples per day.
- Provision of samples (air-stable): one day in advance.
- Please register sensitive samples (air, temperature and/or light sensitive) in advance at 0228/73-5330 or npetrova@uni-bonn.de.
Sample preparation
- Samples must be free of solvents and homogeneous (e.g. powder).
- Fill into clean, labeled sample containers.
- Minimum quantity:
- Solids: 10 mg
- Liquids/oils: 20 mg
- Air/moisture-sensitive substances: 1.5 - 2.5 mg (in the glovebox, by arrangement)
Instructions
- Please fill out the order form completely!
- Please state theoretical values, molecular formula, molar mass and special elements (e.g. F, As, Hg, Os, P, Si, Ru).
- If the samples are submitted on time, the measurement is usually carried out in the same week.
- Samples containing sulphur and/or fluorine are measured after consultation.
- In addition to data collection, we can also prepare the samples and evaluate the measurement results on request.

Elementar Vario Micro Cube
The elements C, H, N and S are routinely determined.
Weighing range:
From micro (<1 mg) to macro samples (1.5 g of soil) and up to 20 mg of organic matter.
From micro (<1 mg) to macro samples (1.5 g of soil) and up to 20 mg of organic matter.
Element concentration range:
Dynamic range of element concentrations:
C: Up to 40 mg absolute or 0 - 100 %
H: Up to 3 mg absolute or 0 - 100 %
N: Up to 15 mg absolute or 0 - 100 %
S: Up to 6 mg absolute or 0 - 100 %
Accuracy:Dynamic range of element concentrations:
C: Up to 40 mg absolute or 0 - 100 %
H: Up to 3 mg absolute or 0 - 100 %
N: Up to 15 mg absolute or 0 - 100 %
S: Up to 6 mg absolute or 0 - 100 %
< 0.1 % absolute (homogeneous substance), depending on sample type, analysis mode and configuration
Measurement principle:
The sample is pyrolyzed in an oxygen-rich atmosphere at approx. 1150 °C. The resulting gases (CO₂, H₂O, N₂, SO₂, etc.) are analyzed and impurities such as halogens are removed using silver wool. Separation takes place via a temperature-controlled adsorption column. Calibration with acetanilide/sulfanilamide.
