MSc Chemistry
The Chemistry master’s degree program is primarily directed at students who have already obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. Students who have graduated from a bachelor’s degree program in another field may also be admitted provided they meet all relevant requirements.
Admission Requirements
The MSc program Chemistry is a consecutive Master's program. Therefore, it connects directly to the Bachelor's program Chemie at the University of Bonn and builds on the knowledge and skills taught therein. Thus it is necessary for successful studying in the Master's program that the contents of the Bachelor's program studied by applicants extensively match those of the Bachelor's program of the University of Bonn.
In respect thereof, the admission procedure serves above all the assessment of the eligibility of the applicants for the Master's program Chemistry at the University of Bonn.
According to the Higher Education Act of NRW, the only basis for the admission is the first professional qualification (generally the preceding Bachelor's degree).
The qualification of the preceding degree consists of the following characteristics:
- average grade of the degree at least 2.9* (German grading system)
- successfully studied modules in the field Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry of at least 25 CP†
- successfully studied modules in the field Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of at least 25 CP†
- successfully studied modules in the field Physical and Theoretical Chemistry of at least 25 CP†
* German system; grades from other systems will be converted by the "Bavarian formula"
† Credit Points (CP) from other systems will be converted.
As the language of examination and instruction is English, candidates must be able to certify sufficient proficiency in English (at least B2 according to CEFR).
Bachelor's degrees from English taught language programs will not be accepted as language certificate any more.
Online-only language tests taken from home (e.g. "TOEFL-iBT Home Edition" oder "Duolingo English Test") cannot be accepted.
The following proofs are accepted:
- TOEFL-iBT (min 72 points)
- IELTS (min 5.5 points)
- UNIcert (level II)
- Cambridge First Certificate (Level B2)
- Pearson PTE Academic (min 59 points)
- language tests of the telc gGmbH
- five years of successful* English classes at a German secondary school

* "successful" means that the fifth year must be passed with at least the grade "ausreichend" (sufficient).

Currently, there are no admission restrictions for the Master's programme Chemistry. Applicants who meet the admission requirements will be admitted to the Master's program.
Application Procedure and Deadlines
The application for admission to the master's program is conducted exclusively online. You will find further information under "Admission Procedure".
You can apply for admission via the application portal (https://application.uni-bonn.de) of the university. Please also check the application guide, which provides important information on how to fill out the online application. The next application period for the upcoming summer semester 2025 will start on the 1st of December 2024 and will end on the 7th of January 2025.
Note: The degree program cannot be selected in the application portal before the start of the application period. It is only displayed in the list of degree programs once the application period started.
The selection committee will examine the applications in January/July. At the end of January/July the applicants will receive a notification on the admission or rejection by the examination board.
The deadline for the enrollment into the Master's program for the winter semester 2024/25: 31.10.2024
The deadline for application for admission to the Master's program...
- for the forthcoming winter semester ends at July 1st.
- for the forthcoming summer semester ends at January 7th.
The deadlines are binding for all applicants, regardless of their country of origin.
Application for admission to the summer semester 2025 will be available from: 01.12.2024 - 07.01.2025
You will need the following documents (scanned as .pdf or .jpg file) for the application:
- Degree certificate or (if you have not yet completed your studies) a current, provisional overview of grades of your first professional degree (e.g. Bachelor's degree). The average (final) grade must be recognizable and the completed modules must be listed individually including the credit points.
- Proof of sufficient English language skills (see Admission Requirements)
- Letter of motivation
- Curriculum vitae (CV)
Optional:
- Module handbook of your bachelor program
- Summary of your bachelor thesis
Not required:
- Letter of recommendation
- Certificates on additional qualifications
All documents must be in either German or English. Translations must be officially certified and uploaded together with a scan of the original document.
Applicants from China, Vietnam and India need an APS certificate. See also the page of the university. See also the website of the university for details.
The admitted applicants will get information on the registration with the notification on the admission. For the registration at the registrar's office all documents that were handed in as copies during the application process must be presented in original.
After enrollment, registration for the master's examination must be made in the examination office. Without registration for the master's examination, no module examination can be registered. The form for this can be found in the download area on the page of the examination board of the Master's program.

In order to successfully complete our Master's degree, you should have already learned certain content from various areas of chemistry in your Bachelor's degree and also be able to work with this Knowledge and skills in theory and practice. In this PDF you will find a voluntary self-assessment that gives you a good overview of the contents of our Bachelor's program in Chemistry at the University of Bonn. Since our Master's program is the direct continuation of our Bachelor's program, almost all contents of our Bachelor's program are required to successfully complete our Master's program. We therefore recommend that all applicants go through the questions and tasks provided before they start their application.
